Types of Braces
There are many types of braces, or “brackets”. Essentially, a bracket is like a handle on a tooth that allows Dr. Simister or Dr. Leaver to move the tooth into precisely the right position. In our practice, we offer several different types of braces for our patients.
Traditional Metal Braces
This is the most common type of braces used, and the most preferred by our patients. They are smaller, more comfortable, and more attractive than ever due to advances in technology. Our younger patients often choose to “accessorize” their braces with fun colors and patterns.
Clear braces are a perfect choice for patients who want all the benefits of braces, without being noticed. In the past, clear ceramic braces were bulky, and were prone to breakage or staining. Modern ceramic brackets, however, have none of these limitations. They are small, comfortable, and beautiful. In our office we use the Clarity Advanced bracket by 3M Unitek. It is the most advanced, translucent, and beautiful bracket available.
Self-ligating braces differ from traditional and ceramic braces in that they do not require a colored rubber tie or a metal tie to secure the wire into place. Instead, these brackets have a built-in door that opens and closes, securing the wire into the bracket. Self-ligating brackets may offer some advantages in certain cases. If that is the case in your situation, Dr. Simister or Dr. Leaver will recommend them to you.
It is important to know that the individual type of bracket used in each case is far less important than what Dr. Simister and Dr. Leaver do with these brackets. Remember, a bracket is essentially a handle that allows the doctor to move the tooth where it needs to go. The key to successful orthodontic treatment begins with the customized treatment plan that Dr. Simister will formulate for your specific needs. Successful execution of this treatment plan has much more to do with the skill of the doctor than the type of bracket on the tooth. Rather than choosing a “one-size fits all” approach to bracket selection, Dr. Simister will evaluate your specific needs and recommend a bracket system that is most appropriate for you.
For those patients who do not want to wear brackets, we offer the Invisalign system. Invisalign is a series of clear plastic aligners that fit over the patient’s teeth, gradually moving them into the correct position. Invisalign is virtually invisible. It is common for patients to go through Invisalign treatment without anyone ever noticing that they are wearing them. At Simister Orthodontics, we are leaders in Invisalign treatment, and have reached Preferred Provider status with Invisalign due to the number of cases we have successfully treated using this system. Invisalign is not just for adults; many children can also be candidates for this treatment, using the Invisalign Teen system. If you are interested in Invisalign treatment and would like to know if you are a candidate, please call or visit our office today for a free consultation.
