We want your orthodontic treatment at Simister Orthodontics to be as comfortable and worry free as possible. Occasionally, there may be times when you will experience minor problems or accidents while away from our office. There is no need to worry. If any incident occurs, our family friendly orthodontics staff is happy to help! We will provide experienced orthodontic care to help alleviate the issue.

In most instances, there is a good chance that you may be able to resolve simple orthodontic issues on your own, from home. Here is a troubleshooting guide to help you remedy various situations.
Discomfort From Braces

At the start of your treatment, or when your doctor makes adjustments to the braces, you may experience mild soreness or discomfort. Maintaining a soft-food diet can help keep this discomfort at a minimum. Rinsing the mouth with antibacterial mouthwash can also reduce inflammation to the gums and cheeks. Applying a heating pad or warm washcloth can also reduce the soreness in the jaw. If you feel it is necessary, you can take a mild pain reliever to alleviate soreness as well.
Lost Separator

In the duration of the treatment, patients may lose a rubber separator. If this happens to you, please feel free to call in and make an appointment for us to replace the separator. If you feel you can do it at home, slip two pieces of dental floss through the spacer. Stretch the separator by pulling the pieces of dental floss. While stretching the separator, carefully slide it back and forth between your teeth. Once in place again, remove the dental floss.
Wire Irritation

If your wire is out of place, you can use a pencil eraser or a cotton swab to push the wire so that it is lying flat against your tooth. If you cannot move the wire, cover it with wax until you come into the office for our family friendly orthodontic staff to fix it. If you need to cut a wire in the case of an emergency, use nail clippers. Be sure to wash and sterilize clippers in alcohol before using.
Loose or Broken Brackets/Bands

For loose brackets or bands that have moved unintentionally, call the office immediately so our experienced family friendly orthodontics staff can remedy the situation quickly. If an appliance falls off, do not discard it. Bring the appliance into your next appointment so we can reattached it.
Call Ahead of Time

If there are any incidents that you are unable to remedy, please don’t hesitate to call our office to schedule an appointment. It is our goal at Simister Orthodontics to provide experienced orthodontic care. Please call ahead of time before visiting the office. This allows our family friendly orthodontics staff ample time to prepare the things that might be needed to repair any broken or loose appliances. If you already have a scheduled appointment, please inform us ahead of time if you need to have an appliance repaired.  If you need help identifying the name of the broken or loose appliance, here is a guide to help you.
